Clearing Debris

Cleaning up your property after a hurricane can be a daunting task. Using a chain saw makes the job easier, but improper operation of the tool can cause serious or fatal injuries. Before operating a chain saw, the American Red Cross recommends:

• Reading the owner’s manual.


• Wearing a helmet, face and hearing protection, cotton or leather gloves, protective chaps or pants and work boots with steel toes.


• Using a reduced kickback bar, low kickback chain and chain brake.


• Avoiding contact between the bar tip and any object.


• Holding the chain saw firmly with both hands.


• Checking the chain brake frequently.


• Following sharpening and maintenance instructions.


• Making sure the saw has a chain brake, chain catcher, safety throttle switch and spark arrester.


• Adjusting the carburetor properly.


• Filling a gas-powered chain saw when the engine is cool.


• Keeping several commercially sharpened saw chains on hand.


• Never over extending when cutting.


• Cutting branches no higher than shoulder height.
