Clearing Debris
Cleaning up your property after a hurricane can be a daunting task. Using a chain saw makes the job easier, but improper operation of the tool can cause serious or fatal injuries. Before operating a chain saw, the American Red Cross recommends:
- Reading the owner’s manual.
- Wearing a helmet, face and hearing protection, cotton or leather gloves, protective chaps or pants and work boots with steel toes.
- Using a reduced kickback bar, low kickback chain and chain brake.
- Avoiding contact between the bar tip and any object.
- Holding the chain saw firmly with both hands.
- Checking the chain brake frequently.
- Following sharpening and maintenance instructions.
- Making sure the saw has a chain brake, chain catcher, safety throttle switch and spark arrester.
- Adjusting the carburetor properly.
- Filling a gas-powered chain saw when the engine is cool.
- Keeping several commercially sharpened saw chains on hand.
- Never over extending when cutting.
- Cutting branches no higher than shoulder height.
