HVAC equipment such as furnaces and hot water heaters can be damaged extensively by a flood. Frequently, the damage is so bad that the only option is replacement.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a good way to protect HVAC equipment is to locate it in an upper floor or attic of a dwelling. If equipment in a flood prone area cannot be relocated, it should be on a concrete or masonry block with a floodwall around it. FEMA stresses a floodwall must be strong enough and high enough to provide adequate protection.
