Knowing what to do during a natural disaster or severe weather event will help you and your family weather the storm. Making it through natural disasters or severe weather is easier when you are prepared. Trusted Choice insurance agents want to ensure that you are ready for when a hurricane strikes, which will help keep you and your family safe and able to cope with the damage and issues created by a severe storm.

Experts such as the staff of the American Red Cross, recommend that people know the difference between a hurricane watch and hurricane warning.

A watch means hurricane conditions are possible in a specified area, usually within 36 hours. A warning means conditions are expected in the specified area, usually within 24 hours.

It is also recommended that you stay informed by listening to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio or local radio or TV stations for updates that could include evacuation orders from public safety officials.

As a hurricane approaches, prepare to bring inside any lawn furniture, outdoor decorations or ornaments, trash cans, hanging plants and any items that can be picked up by the wind.

Prepare to cover all windows of your home. If shutters have not been installed, use precut plywood. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking, so taping windows is not recommended.

Fill the gas tanks of motor vehicles.

If you are not told to evacuate the area in which you live, stay indoors, away from windows.

Be aware that the calm eye of a hurricane is deceptive. The worst part of the storm will happen once the eye passes over and the winds blow from the opposite direction. Trees, shrubs, buildings and other objects damaged by initial winds can be broken or destroyed by a second round of winds.

Be alert for tornadoes. Tornadoes can happen during a hurricane and after it passes over. Remain indoors, in the center of your home, in a closet or bathroom without windows.

Stay away from flood waters. If you come upon a flooded road when driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the motor vehicle and climb to higher ground.
